Venogram

A venogram is a test offered by Synergy Vascular and Interventional to detect an abnormality within a vein, such as a narrowing or a blockage. Using a type of X-ray guidance called fluoroscopy, a contrast agent, or special dye, is injected in a vein. If an abnormality is found, it can be treated with balloon angioplasty or stenting, sometimes during the venogram procedure.

Pelvic Congestion syndrome (PCS) is essentially varicose veins surrounding the ovary. It’s found in women, occurring in the pelvis and legs, and causes chronic pain that lasts longer than 6 months.

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome occurs most in women of reproductive age due to increased estrogen. If hormonal medications are not an option or are unsuccessful, other treatment options exist to help treat it.

Symptoms of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome are:

  1. Dull aching pain in the pelvis and legs
  2. Pelvic and leg pain gets worse towards the end of the day, especially in women who stand for the majority of their day
  3. Pain associated with intercourse

PCS is difficult to diagnose since many things can cause pelvic pain. The first step in addressing PCS is talking to your gynecologist to rule out any other causes.

Since PCS is due to estrogen levels, it typically will not go away on its own and will need intervention. The best way to eliminate pelvic congestive syndrome is through various treatment options.

At Synergy Radiology, we offer venograms to treat PCS.  During a venogram and embolization, one of our doctors will enter your hip or neck vein. We will then select an incompetent vein that directs to the pelvis. Once we find the vein, we can block it with coils or scar them down.

Surgery for Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

There are also surgeries that you can do. However, at Synergy, we recommend venograms due to their minimally-invasive nature. There is also little downtime after the procedure, and you can still conceive children in the future.
