Precise Liver Cancer Treatment In Houston Area
Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE)
Transarterial chemoembolization treatment for cancer uses imaging guidance to identify blood vessels that supply blood to a tumor in the liver. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which delivers cancer drugs throughout the body, TACE delivers targeted embolic agents and chemotherapy directly into a liver tumor, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy liver tissue.
This technique, offered at all 10 of Synergy Vascular and Interventional’s Houston-area partner locations is used most often to treat primary liver cancer, but may also be used in patients whose cancer has spread to the liver from other parts of the body. It can be used as a standalone treatment or may be used in combination with other treatments, including surgery and immunotherapy.
During the TACE procedure, one of Synergy Vascular and Interventional’s interventional radiologists guides a catheter through the body’s blood vessels to the artery in the liver feeding the tumor. Embolization spheres loaded with chemotherapy agents block the flow of blood to the tumor, and the chemotherapy is slowly released into the tumor vascular bed while effectively “trapped” in the tumor. This technique destroys cancer while minimizing the impact of chemotherapy on other, healthy areas of the body.
