Nephrostomy Tube Placement Services in the Houston, TX area
The function of the kidneys is to make urine, which is then carried by a tube called the ureter into the bladder, where it is then expelled from the body during urination. Sometimes, a ureter can become blocked, which can block the flow of urine to the bladder, causing infection or damage to the kidney.
Synergy Vascular and Interventional offers nephrostomy placement services at 10 Houston-area hospital and outpatient centers. A nephrostomy is an artificial tube that is placed by one of our interventional radiologists within the kidney and through the skin in the back. Its job is to temporarily drain the blocked urine, allowing the kidney to function, prevent further damage and to allow an infection to heal. During the procedure, ultrasound or X-ray is used to guide the placement of the tube. The patient typically receives sedation prior to the procedure.
When the kidney is once again performing properly, the nephrostomy tube can be removed. In some scenarios, the nephrostomy access can be used to place stents within the ureters and bladder.
