Port Placement & Removal Procedures in Houston, Texas
Patients who need long-term IV access for medicines such as chemotherapy can benefit from the placement of a port-a-cath, a small, totally implantable subcutaneous catheter that allows easy vascular access without the need for repeated IVs. The port reservoir is implanted under the skin, usually in the upper chest, with catheter tubing connecting the reservoir to the vascular system. One of Synergy Vascular and Interventional’s board-certified will use ultrasound or X-ray to safely guide the placement of the device under the skin and into the access vein.
Unlike a PICC line, a port can stay in as long as you need treatment, up to several years, and does not require daily cleaning and flushing. When there is no longer the need for a port, it can be removed by one of our highly-trained interventional radiologists. Ports can also be checked if they are not functioning as expected, with interventional radiologists available to evaluate, repair and replace ports using advanced imaging not readily available to many other specialists who may also offer port-a-cath services.
